Let's talk sofas.

I had a DFS sofa.

I bought it with a 0% finance deal & payment plan, just before I started university back in 1998. I took it with me to uni and it lasted me nearly 20 years.

It survived three different houses through university, then it voyaged up to London with me, sat proudly in two different houses there for about 6 years and then came back down to Cornwall again… and basically I still had it up until last year! So please don't think I am some kind of sofa snob, I'm not at all. I LOVED it, it was really comfortable. It was a cream coloured corner sofa with really soft squishy cushions and by the end there was not a lot of firm seating left in her to be quite honest. My Dad was not a fan, it was low and dumpy - basically a bed - not ideal for someone in the 70’s really though is it.

Now that I’m older, and through to my second pregnancy.. and perhaps being fortunate enough to go and stay in some very nice establishments like Soho House for example. I now know what it’s like to sit in a very good quality sofa.

I think there's something to be said for slightly more formal seating in a lounge where you don't just necessarily “lounge” back, but more “sit” in a sitting room (see what I did there!). I think it’s more sociable, more grown up. Gone are the days where you just hang out on the sofa under a duvet watching Netflix. Although, I love and miss those days, they perhaps just won't be so frequent anymore.

So, we've decided to go for a casual-comfy sofa in the kitchen because I think the kids will probably be on this one a lot more throughout the day (i’ll talk about this beauty in another post!). And then have a bit more formal, more expensive sofa in the lounge. The only way we were able to afford this “fancy” sofa is because of our friends at The Pig (Hotel). They buy all their sofas from George Smith (as do Soho House) otherwise I certainly couldn’t even entertain the idea, but with their very generous trade discount. We were able to nab one and I’m so so excited about it!

We spent a little while going back and forth with the design. We were tempted to go for a corner sofa again or maybe even a u-shape sofa but in the end, settled for one extra long bespoke sofa that will be paired with two chairs and a few stools. It's a bit unusual, but I think it lends itself well to the shape of the room.

Fabric - Oh the fabric choices (my poor husband) this wasn’t easy. Do you go play it safe, do you go dark (which is good for grubby little fingers) or a pattern which can then be tricky to pair with curtains and wall colours?

However, after a long debate I’m excited to announce that we have indeed - gone bold, we wen’t for quite a busy pattern! I've been Miss Beige for the last 10 years but this new Mama is ready to take a leap and dive head first into the creative world of interiors and really go for it! If I don’t now, I know I never will.

I think the sofa takes about 10 weeks to make and is arriving mid September - so watch this space.
